Ms Haley is tasked with appointing a senator after Jim DeMint, who is currently holding the post, announced he is resigning at the end of the year.
Thousands of messages poured into the governor's official account with the hashtag "SenatorColbert".
However Ms Haley was quick to respond, posting a link on her Facebook page to her April appearance on The Colbert Report where it was revealed that the host, who was raised in Charleston, did not know that the state beverage was milk.
"But you forget one thing, my friend. You didn't know our state drink. Big, big mistake," Ms Haley wrote.
